How Long Should Website Content Be for SEO?

There is no ideal word count for SEO. Website content should be as long as it needs to be to answer the reader’s question fully and clearly, without padding, so a simple answer might need a few hundred words while a detailed guide might need much more.

Google has said that word count is not a ranking factor in itself. What matters is whether the content is helpful.

Why Longer Is Not Automatically Better

You may have heard that longer content always ranks better. Longer pages do sometimes perform well, but usually because they cover a topic thoroughly, not simply because they contain more words.

Adding extra words just to reach a target often makes content worse. Readers have to wade through repetition and filler to find what they need, and many will give up.

A clear, focused page that answers the question well is far more valuable than a long one that rambles.

Matching Length to Purpose

Different types of content naturally need different lengths. A contact page or a short FAQ answer might need very little text. A service page usually needs enough detail to explain what you offer, how it works, who it suits and what customers can expect.

A guide answering a complex question, such as how to plan a loft conversion, may need much more depth, with sections covering costs, planning rules, timescales and common mistakes.

Think about what the reader wants to know, and cover that properly.

How to Judge If Content Is Long Enough

Search for your main topic and look at the pages that already rank well. This is not about copying them, but about understanding what level of detail searchers seem to expect.

Then ask yourself some simple questions. Does the page answer the main question near the top? Does it cover the follow-up questions a customer is likely to have? Would someone need to visit another website to get the full picture?

If the answers suggest gaps, the page may need more content. If it repeats itself or drifts off topic, it may be too long.

Thin Content and What to Do About It

Thin content means pages with very little useful information, such as service pages with only a sentence or two, or location pages that simply swap one town name for another. These pages rarely perform well and can make a website look less helpful overall.

Improving them usually means adding genuinely useful detail, such as how the service works, common questions, pricing factors and examples. Sometimes it means combining several weak pages into one stronger page.
